George F. Jessop, retired banker
George F. Jessop, 68 of Lewes, passed away Sunday, Aug. 16, 2009, at the Jefferson University Hospital, Philadelphia, Pa. George was born in New York City Jan. 31, 1941, son of the late George F. and Julia Anna (Murphy) Jessop.
George was a graduate of the University of Notre Dame and had a distinguished career in banking, retiring in 2000. George’s retirement years were spent in the sun at the Delaware beaches.
He is survived by his wife Linda; daughter Daryl and husband Joe; two sons, Keith and wife Stefanie, and Kevin and wife Katrina; and sister Betty. He was also the proudest “PopPop” to four wonderful grandchildren, Bryanna, Kara, Joseph and Sebastian.
George’s family wishes to thank the staff of Beebe Medical Center and Jefferson University Hospital for their excellent care.
Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated at 11 a.m., Thursday Aug. 20, at St. Jude the Apostle Catholic Church, at Five Points, Lewes. Burial will be private.

Robert E. Parker, retired carpenter
Robert E. Parker, 76, of Millsboro, passed away Friday, Aug. 14, 2009, at Christiana Care, Newark.
Robert was a self-employed carpenter for over 40 years.
He was a go-kart racing fan with his grandchildren and was a crew chief for the “Millsboro Posse.” You could see him at Hardee’s drinking coffee with the gang.
He always had his head stuck in a motor and was always working on something. He loved his family and was proud of them. He was a member of the Hickory Hill United Methodist Church, Millsboro.
He is preceeded in death by his father, Delphi Parker. He is survived by his mother, Pearl Davis, of Millsboro; his wife Frances D. Parker; sons Jeffrey Parker and wife Robin of Georgetown, Donald Lee Hall and wife Regina of Millsboro; daughter Pam Jones and husband R.G. of Georgetown; brother, Vaughn Parker of Georgetown; sister Shirley Procuret of Bradenton, Fla.; five grandchildren, Colby, Cameron, Quintin, Kyle and Megan; and one great-grandchild, Lilly.
A funeral service will be held at noon, Friday Aug. 21, at Watson Funeral Home, 211 S. Washington St., Millsboro, where friends may call one hour prior. Pastor Betty Jo Magee and the Rev. Fred Duncan will officiate. Burial will be in Millsboro Cemetery.

Susan C. McKelvey, registered nurse
Susan Carol McKelvey, 52, passed away Friday, Aug. 14, 2009, at the Delaware Hospice Center, Milford.
She was born Oct. 9, 1956, in Philadelphia, Pa., daughter of the late John and Margaret (Ramage) Schmider.
Mrs. McKelvey had worked as a registered nurse at Kessler Memorial Hospital and Greenbriar Health Care Center, both in Hammonton, N.J. She enjoyed reading, painting, traveling and studying theology, including the Christian and Buddhist faiths.
She was preceded in death by her husband, Wallace A. McKelvey, in Oct. 2008. She is survived by her son, Wallace J. McKelvey, of Rehoboth Beach.
A private ceremony will be held at a later date.

Jeanne E. Menning, registered nurse
Jeanne E. Menning, 74, of Millsboro, formerly of Gualala, Calif., passed away peacefully surrounded by her loving family Saturday, Aug. 15, 2009, at her home.
Mrs. Menning was born June 9, 1935, in Philadelphia, Pa., daughter of the late Samuel Irving and Carolyn (Kane) Neely. Mrs. Menning devoted her life as a registered nurse before retiring in 1995.
She loved sewing, making clothes and crafts and in her free time she enjoyed shopping.
In addition to her parents she was preceded in death by her husband, R. Kurt Menning, in 2005. She is survived by three sons, Alex Orsini, Vincent Orsini and his wife Kathleen, all of California and Gregory Orsini and his wife Ellen, of New Jersey; a daughter, Monica Orsini of California; three grandchildren, Laura, Colin and Aaron Orsini; and a sister, Marie Johnson, of Ellendale.
A memorial service will be held at 11 a.m., Wednesday, Aug. 19, at the Long Neck Chapel of Melson Funeral Services, 32013 Long Neck Road, Millsboro, where friends and family may call after 10:30 a.m. Interment will be private.
In lieu of flowers the family suggests memorial contributions in Jeanne’s name to the Delaware Hospice Center, 100 Patriots Way, Milford, DE 19963.

Ann Mary R. Lewis, home health nurse
Ann Mary Robertson Lewis, beloved daughter of William and Theresa Robertson; sister of Cathleen, Julia and William Robertson; sister-in-law to Anne Robertson, passed away Friday, Aug. 14, 2009, of ovarian cancer, at her parents’ home in Lewes, with whom she has lived since 2007. She was born April 4, 1963, raised in Arlington, Va., graduated from Bishop D.J. O’Donnell High Sschool and graduated from Summi/ Finlandia College with a degree in nursing in 1999. She was a resident of Houghton/Hancock, Mich. from 1995 to 2007. Ann Mary was a hospice and home health nurse for Portage Home Health.
Numerous relatives, friends, medical associates, and patients will mourn Ann Mary. Services will be private. In lieu of flowers, Ann Mary has requested that donations be made to Compassionate Care Hospice, 31038 Country Garden Blvd, Suite D2, Dagsboro, DE. 19939.

Constance Robertson, Rehoboth resident
Constance ‘Button’ Brittingham Robertson, 60, of Rehoboth Beach, passed away Saturday, Aug. 8, 2009, at her residence, surrounded by family, following a brief illness. Funeral services were held Saturday, Aug. 15, at The Philadelphia Pentecostal Church, Ellendale, with interment at Friendship Church Cemetery in Lewes. Professional service of compassion provided by Deborah E. Harris-Nock Funeral Services, Laurel.

Wesley W. Johnson, retired trucker
Wesley W. Johnson, 83, of Farmington, lost his fight with cancer, Thursday, Aug. 13, 2009, at his home. Wesley served in World War II with the 4th Marine Division on Iwo Jima as a medic, where he was wounded. Until he retired, Wesley drove for several trucking companies. Wesley was preceded in death by his parents, Ward and Enola Johnson of Farmington; a sister, Ida Belle Robertson; a brother, Paul “Johnny” Johnson; his first wife, Margaret Reynolds Johnson; his second wife, Loretta Hollinger Johnson; and his third wife, Barbara Brakeman Johnson. He is survived by four brothers and one sister, Harold Johnson of Burnsville, N.C., James Johnson of Slaughter Beach, William “Bill” Johnson of Greenwood, Wayne Johnson of Millsboro, and Gail Johnson of Bridgeville; four stepchildren, David Gricks of Copperas Cove, Texas, Kerri Forshee of Shakopee, Minn., Tammy Beaulieu of Harrington, and Daniel Gricks of Pleasantville, Pa.; two grandchildren, Shayla Beaulieu and Peypon Jean Gricks. A memorial service will be 2 p.m., Wednesday, Aug. 19, at the Harrington Moose Lodge. M. Carol Short, retired teacher
M. Carol Short, 63, of Rehoboth Beach, died Thursday, Aug. 13, 2009, after a 20-year battle with breast cancer.
Carol grew up on a farm in Georgetown. She attended Georgetown High School, class of 1963, and the University of Delaware. Carol graduated from the University of South Carolina, where she was a member of Delta Delta Delta sorority. She obtained her master’s in education from Delaware State University. Ms. Short was predeceased by her parents, Marjorie Townsend Bramhall in 2002 and Robert Alden Short in 1977.
Carol was an English teacher at Milford High School for 18 years and at Delaware Technical & Community College in Georgetown. She retired in 1997. Before teaching, Ms. Short worked as an airline hostess for Capitol International Airways, an executive secretary for Peachtree Hyatt-Regency Hotel in Atlanta, Ga., as well as the Sheraton Boston Hotel. She was an assistant foreign student advisor at Harvard Law School and personal secretary to U.S. Congressman Donald Riegle as well as Sen. Strom Thurmond. Carol enjoyed Shakespeare, reading and travel, but most of all, she enjoyed being with her family and friends. She particularly enjoyed being a life-changing influence on her students.
Carol’s loving presence and warm smile will be forever remembered in the hearts of her loved ones and friends. She was a great listener, a charming conversationalist and a lot of fun to be with. Carol interviewed with the Cape Gazette in 1996 about having terminal cancer: “When you first hear the news, it’s like being at a ball game that’s called because of the rain. You feel like you’re out of the game.” Short pursued a cure through large cancer centers, nutritional strategies, acupuncture, yoga, therapy, support groups and the internet.
Carol is survived by two sisters, Deborah Short Merkle and her husband Martin of Portland, Ore., and Nancy Short Vickers and her husband Ron of Dover; and her brother, Robert Alden Short Jr. of Maui, Hawaii; her niece, Tessa Jane Merkle of Portland and her nephews, Lucas Burns Merkle of Rehoboth Beach and Will Short Vickers of Dover. Carol is also survived by her uncles, Eben Bramhall and his wife Evelyn of Newark, George Bramhall and his wife Sue of Seaford and Wellington Bramhall and his wife Bobbie of Banner Elk, N.C.; and her aunts Ann Wilson and her husband Bob of Milton and Iva Booth of Georgetown; and her uncle Stanley Marvel and his wife Jeanie of Melbourne Beach, Fla.
Finally, Ms. Short is survived by her many close friends, Donna Fischer of Lewes, Bill Pusey of Ocean View, Martha Jane Donovan of Milton, Debbie Brittingham of Millsboro, Darlene Vreeland of Milford, Mary Ann Chorman of Milton, Angie Parks of Salisbury, Md., Mary Ann Lining of Greenville, S.C., Lucille Trasatti of Milton, her oncologist, Dr. Sandra Foote of Milford and her loving Shitzi, Liz. Funeral services will be held at noon, Tuesday, Aug. 18, at Epworth United Methodist Church, 19285 Holland Glade Road, Rehoboth Beach. Burial will be private. Margaret M. Conley, business owner
Margaret “Aunt Peggy” M. Conley, 69, of Newark, passed away Wednesday, Aug. 12, 2009.
Mrs. Conley was owner-operator of Conley Enterprises before retiring.
She is survived by her husband of 50 years, George E. Conley; her children, Marc L. Conley of Middletown, Edward K. Conley and wife Tina of Newark, Aloah Peacock and partner Cheryl Betts of Bear, Connie L. Wilt of McClure, Pa., Lori A. Conley of Newark and Rebecca Sue Conley Tait of Narrows, Va.; 16 grandchildren; and four great-grandchildren; three brothers, Joseph Gratton Hill and wife Cecilia of Rehoboth Beach, Roy David Hill and wife Karen and David Blaine and wife Edith, all of Pocahontas, Va.; two sisters, Hellen Gravely and husband Jerry of Pocahontas and Connie “Bit” Wynn of Union, S.C. Margaret is also survived by many other family and friends. The funeral was held in the chapel at Gracelawn Memorial Park, N. Dupont Highway, New Castle. Entombment followed in the adjoining memorial park.
