Michael A. Codi, retired officer
Michael Arne Codi, 88, a retired foreign service officer, died Sunday, June 27, 2009, in Naples, Fla. He had been suffering from a stroke and Alzheimer’s disease.
Born in New York City in 1921, he was attending the University of California Los Angeles when World War II broke out. He enrolled in the Navy and became a pilot. He also spent some time in the Coast Guard patrolling the East Coast from above.
After the war, he went back to school on the GI bill and studied foreign service at Georgetown University in Washington, D.C. He met Marguerite, his wife of nearly 60 years, there. He started his career working for the Department of State by moving to Germany in 1950 during the post-war rebuilding era. He traveled there with a group of young men who would remain friends for many years and who still got together for reunions well into their retirement.
He was later posted to Turkey, then to Lebanon, Turkey for a second tour and finally for five years to Ivory Coast, where he was the regional director of AID for the French speaking West African countries.
He was awarded a Medal of Honor from President Houphouet-Boigny for his excellent work in the Ivory Coast. His French was fluent, thanks in part to his wife, a native Frenchwoman, and to his ease in learning languages. He could get by in Turkish and German when posted in those countries.
His main interest and expertise was helping small businesses grow in developing nations. He loved to travel, and took every opportunity to explore countries neighboring the ones he lived in with his family.
After returning to the United States at the end of 1969, he was primarily involved with the American Schools and Hospitals Abroad program, which led him to the Far and Middle East, Central America and back to Africa until 1973. All the friendships and connections he made over the years helped him greatly with this program, and he enjoyed returning to many of the countries where he had once lived.
After retiring from the government in the mid-1970s, he worked with the International Eye Foundation until 1980, when he and Marguerite retired to Lewes.
There he got interested in real estate, thanks to his wife who had been a Realtor in Washington, and who continued her career with Coldwell Banker for many years. They loved Lewes, and acquired several properties, notably the Old Shoe building, one of the oldest in town.
He also became a docent for the University of Delaware’s College of Marine Studies, which he really enjoyed, having always been interested in the oceans and marine life.
They moved to Naples in 2003 for the warm weather and to be near their son Alan, who cared for them for the last five years. Marguerite passed away in early 2008 after a long fight with an infection.
He is survived by his son Alan, of Naples; and his daughter Suzanne, of Washington, D.C.; and four grandchildren.
