Weekly programs begin June 18 and end Sept. 3. Many of the following programs require preregistration.
Entrance fees are collected daily from May 1 through September 30, and on weekends and holidays in October. The fee allows one vehicle and its passengers to enter any Delaware State Park on the date of purchase. Once in the park, visitors may enjoy such activities as swimming, birdwatching, hiking, picnicking, or simply relaxing. Entry fee for a registered vehicle in Delaware is $2.50 a day; an out-of-state registered vehicle fee is $5 a day.
All programs meet at the Seaside Nature Center unless otherwise noted. Programs are designed for individuals and families. Schools, scouts and other organized group can contact the nature center to arrange a field trip program. For more information, call the Seaside Nature Center at 645-6852
o Testing the Waters- A 50th Anniversary Program
Thursdays, 1 p.m.
The Delaware Bay watershed covers 13,500 square miles of land in four states. Water drains into the bay from the Catskills and Poconos and from Philadelphia, Wilmington, and other urban areas. Testing the Waters will investigate the water quality in Delaware Bay by collecting and testing water samples from the Cape Henlopen Fishing Pier. Preregistration is required. Limit 25. $2 per person.
o Delaware Breakwater Kayak Trip
Daily, 10 a.m.
Participants will paddle a sit-on-top kayak from the fishing pier around the Delaware Breakwater and Lewes Harbor. Along the way the naturalist will discuss the cultural and natural history of Cape Henlopen and Lewes Harbor. Participants will receive basic instruction before heading out on the two-hour paddling trip. These trips are designed for beginning paddlers, but can be strenuous depending on water and wind conditions. All equipment is provided. Participants should bring plenty of drinking water and be prepared to get wet. Limit 10. Preregistration is required. Must be 16 years or older. $20 per person.
o Seining the Bay
Mondays, Wednesdays, and Fridays, 9:30 a.m.
Participants will help pull a 25-foot net through the bay shallows and learn about the fish, crabs and other creatures that are caught. Wear closed-toed shoes and clothes that can get wet. Tickets go on sale at the nature center at 9 a.m. for that day's programs. Limited to six tickets per family. Scouts and other organized groups must book seining programs through the Nature Center office. Limit 30. $3 per person.
o Beach Creatures - A 50th Anniversary Program
Mondays, Wednesdays, and Fridays, 1 p.m.
Have you ever wondered what kinds of creatures are sharing the beach and ocean with you? Beach Creatures program will meet at the ocean end of the swimming beach boardwalk, where participants will learn about the crabs, fish and other creatures that live in the ocean and on the beaches around Cape Henlopen.
o All About Ospreys
Tuesdays, 10 a.m.
Participants will learn about these amazing aerial anglers in an informative slide show and then travel to the point to see one of its resident pairs care for their growing young. Limit 25. Preregistration required. $1 per person.
o Nuts and Bolts of Taxonomy - A 50th Anniversary Program Tuesdays, 1 p.m.
Participants will learn about the fascinating science of taxonomy in this interactive program and discover how scientists name and classify living organisms, unravel the relationships between different groups, and classify a group of common household items in a fun, hands-on activity. Limit 25. Preregistration is required. $1 per person.
o Night Hike
Wednesdays, 8:30 p.m.
Participants will join a naturalist for a guided hike to discover the incredible nocturnal life at Cape Henlopen State Park. Meet at the campground amphitheater.
o Delaware's Guiding Lights
Thursdays, 10 a.m.
Participants will learn about the lighthouses that have guided mariners through the treacherous waters surrounding the Cape for more than 230 years.
o Nature after Dark
Thursdays, 8:30 p.m.
Participants will meet at the campground amphitheater to learn about the animals that rise with the setting sun and earn their living at Cape Henlopen after dark.
o Legends and Lore of the Cape
Fridays, 8:30 p.m.
Participants will discover lore, legends and fascinating true stories about incredible Cape Henlopen. Meet at the campground amphitheater.
o Dolphin Watch
Saturdays, 9 a.m.
Bottle-nosed dolphins are common summer visitors as they travel and feed in the waters off the Cape. Participants will join a park naturalist and search for dolphins from land at the Bunker Overlook and learn more about these amazing marine mammals. Limit 25. Preregistration is required. $1 per person.
o Beach on the Move A 50th Anniversary Program
Saturdays, 1 p.m.
Currents, tides and winds are constantly shifting, shoving and shuffling the sand on Delaware's beaches. Participants will meet at the ocean end of the swimming area boardwalk and discover the dynamic nature of its sandy beaches.
o Touch Tank Talks
Saturdays and Sundays, 2 p.m.
Participants will meet at the Seaside Nature Center to meet and learn about the marine creatures that live in a 300-gallon touch tank.
o Bird Walk
Sundays, 8 a.m.
The Cape's many habitats attract an incredible diversity of birds. Participants meet each Sunday morning and scour ocean, shore, and forest in search of resident and migratory species. Binoculars and insect repellent are recommended. Preregistration is required.
o Battery Tour
Sundays, 1 p.m.
Participants will learn about Fort Miles during WWII and then take a guided tour of the battery that housed Fort Miles' awesome 16-inch guns. Limit 20. Preregistration is required. $3 per person.
o Family Fun Campfire
Sundays, 8:30 p.m.
A blazing campfire for songs, stories, games and more will be enjoyed by participants of the Family Fun campfires, which meet at the campground amphitheater.
o Cape Walkers
Thursdays, 8 a.m.
Participants will meet for a two to three-mile fitness walk along one of Cape Henlopen's trails. This program is guaranteed to benefit the body and spirit!
o Full Moon Hike
July 5, 8 p.m.
Discover Cape Henlopen by night as the full moon bathes the ocean and dunes in light. Participants will also learn about moon lore and legends, as well as the nocturnal adaptations of plants and animals. Limit 25. Preregistration is required. $2 per person.
o Night Sounds - A 50th Anniversary Program
July 17, 8:30 p.m.
Take a guided hike through the pinelands at the Cape to listen for and identify the nocturnal birds, amphibians and insects that sing, call and cry through the night. Preregistration is required. Limit 25.
o Full Moon Hike
August 4, 8 p.m.
Discover Cape Henlopen by night as the full moon bathes the ocean and dunes in light. Participants will also learn about moon lore and legends, as well as the nocturnal adaptations of plants and animals. Limit 25. Preregistration is required. $2 per person.
o Sensory Hike - A 50th Anniversary Program
August 21, 8:30 p.m.
Humans are instinctively most active during the day and often feel uncomfortable out of doors after dark. In this program participants will learn how to use their senses to unveil the hidden world of nature at night. Preregistration is required. Limit 25.
