American Heart Association
honors Dr. James Beebe Jr.

The American Hospital Association has honored Dr. James Beebe Jr. for the significant contribution he has made to communities throughout Delaware on behalf of Beebe Medical Center.

The American Heart Association (AHA) Senior Vice President Steve Ahnen came to Lewes to present the formal resolution to Beebe on the 50th anniversary of his service to the Beebe Medical Center board of directors. Beebe continues to serve as a member of the board.

“Dr. James Beebe Jr. has built a legacy of achievement on behalf of Beebe Medical Center that has touched the lives of communities throughout Delaware and who, to his colleagues, has set a standard against which the efforts of others will be measured in the future,” the resolution states. It goes on to say “The Board of Trustees of the American Hospital Association offer our gratitude and admiration for the life and work of Dr. James Beebe Jr., and further acknowledge his lasting contribution to the strength of our communities.” Rich Umbdenstock, president and CEO of the AHA, signed the resolution.

“We are proud this national hospital organization has honored Dr. Beebe,” said Jan McCarty, chairwoman of the Beebe Medical Center Board of Directors.

Beebe grew up in the household where his father was devoted to caring for both visitors and residents of Sussex County. Beebe went off to Philadelphia to study medicine at Jefferson University and joined Beebe Hospital’s medical staff after completing graduate school for surgery at the University of Pennsylvania in 1949. At the time he was the only board certified surgeon south of Wilmington. In 1950, Beebe already was working on developing an organized cancer program at Beebe Hospital. On Oct. 11, 1957, he was appointed to the board of directors, and served as board president from Jan. 18, 1974 to Oct. 22, 1976.

Beebe served on the state board of medical practice for 23 years, and on the board of governors for the College of Surgeons for six years. He also served on the Lewes School Board for 15 years.

Officially retiring from his medical practice in 1993, Beebe has been recognized by many for his commitments to the health and well-being of others. The Medical Society of Delaware, of which he is a member, has honored him with its Distinguished Award as well as its President’s Award. In 2005, he and his wife, Betty Mann-Beebe, received the Robert W. Tunnell Sr. Award for Service to Beebe Medical Center.
