Cape girls lacrosse team tops Sussex Tech Ravens 19-9

By Dave Frederick

Sussex Tech lacrosse coach Katherine Fluharty did not hesitate to schedule Cape for the first year of varsity play for her Ravens team.

“The best way to learn is to step on the field with the better teams,” Fluharty said after the Ravens lost to Cape Henlopen 19-9. “You can only talk and simulate so many situations in practice.”

Cape jumped out early scoring nine unanswered goals in the first nine minutes of play to lead 9-0 as Raelynn Grogan had the hat trick while speedster Alec Perry scored two.
Maxine Fluharty, just a freshman, was taking faceoffs for Tech and running the middle of the field using fast and faster pacing and scored two goals for the Ravens and went on to score eight for the game.

“We came in here hoping to score seven goals and we scored nine,” Katherine Fluharty said. “Maxine’s job is to be a leader and make players around her better.”

The score at halftime was 14- 4 as Cape coach P.J. Kesmodel carefully worked all his players into the game. Cheyenne Geyer scored two first-half goals for Cape and Katie Yeager also scored.

Lindsay Danz, who picked up a stick for the first time last month, scored a goal with 10 minutes left in the first half.

“I’m really having fun and learning the game,” said the scholarshipped field hockey player on her way to Bloomsburg. “The assistant field hockey coach is also the lacrosse coach so it looks like I’ll be playing in college.”

Lillie Lingo scored goal No. 99 of her career early in the second half and when she came to the sideline Kesmodel smiled and told her not to make it look so easy. Lingo would later score again to become Cape’s first 100-goal scorer.

Goal scorers for the game were Maxine Fluharty 8, and Lindsay Danz 1, for Tech. Cape goals were Lillie Lingo 4, Raelynn Grogan 4, Alec Perry 3, Kaci Coveleski 2, Cheyene Geyer 2 and single goals from Caroline Judge, Allison Young, Hilary Merlo, and Katie Yeager.

The girls beat Wilmington Friends on Saturday, April 26,15-8.
