The Cape boys lacrosse team began the season looking bad and losing to defending state champion Salesianum 10-2 at Baynard Stadium in Wilmington.
There were stats surrounding that game like ground balls and shots on goal that indicated it was not domination, but nevertheless, every time the Vikings have taken the field since running off 12 straight wins that loss has been sitting there. Cape is all about closing the gap and getting back for another shot at the undefeated Sals hopefully in the state championship game.
“They are good, no question about that, but we have gotten a lot better than we were that opening game,” said Cape head coach Mark D’Ambrogi. “It’s just a matter of us taking care of business from here on out as every game is a big one.”
Cape will work and wear out an average team as it did last Friday, May 2, defeating visiting Salisbury School 15-5 while leading 9-2 at the half.
Ian Stewart led Cape scorers with six goals while Scott Brozey and Rory Rogan each scored three. Chris Woodruff, Blake Woodruff and Mark Tappan each scored once. The Vikings put 33 shots on goal for the game.
Senior goalie Franc Cook was credited with 6 saves. Ike Fairley dominated the faceoff circle while long-pole defenseman Alex Albanese continued to play like he is the best full-field defenseman in the state.
The Cape junior varsity has also run the table after an opening loss at Salesianum and will be tested this Wednesday, May 7, at Caesar Rodney. The junior varsity game is at 5 p.m. followed by the varsity contest. This is always the junior varsity showdown of the year, so get there in time to support the team.
