ANOTHER HENLOPEN CROWN

Cape laxmen make it
two in a row with win over Riders

Cape boys head lacrosse coach Mark D’Ambrogi was surprisingly serene after Cape got away from a tight 9-7 fourth quarter game to beat Caesar Rodney 13-8 to raise its season record to 13-1 and secure the Henlopen Conference championship on Wednesday, May 7.

“The conference title is nice for the kids but we must have turned the ball over 25 to 30 times,” D’Ambrogi said. “We seem to play that way every time we come up here. I don’t know if it’s the rivalry or because the kids see them in so many other sports and leagues. Tonight we took a step – I’m just not sure it’s the step we needed to take.”

D’Ambrogi was referring to undefeated Salesianum, saying, “Sallies has set the bar in the state and we’re just trying to get to the level where we can compete at that same level.”

Cape was powered in the game by left-handed gun slingers Scott Brozey and Ian Stewart. Brozey sent five high to the corner tracer shots past goalie Brandon Wood, while Stewart dished off five assists to go with a pair of goals.

Mark Tappan on crease attack scored three times, while Rory Rogan scored two and Bryan Mack scored one.

“Stewart has played great over the last three weeks I think, finally realizing he can do more than score. His ability to feed the ball has just opened up the offense.”

Stewart himself says “Thank you,” when congratulated on his game, then it’s all lacrosse talk for the senior who talks about putting crisp passes on the ears of his mates, going to X to distribute the ball or coming out high to set plays in motion.

The Caesar Rodney sophomore attack was paced by Matt Matsko with three goals, Justin McPhail with two, Eric Hoffstadt with two and single goals by Joe Vosell and Matt Denmen.

Cape goalie Franc Cook had 14 real deal saves helping the Vikings avert disaster in the turnover plagued game.

Cape plays at Tower Hill at 3:45 p.m. Monday, May 12.
