Two companies merged to wage war on mosquitoes

In the war against mosquitoes, everything in the arsenal has been brought to the front – yet the pests usually win in the end. They have been around for about 30 million years.

A local company may finally have the answer to keep them in check – and at least allow homeowners to enjoy time out in their yard this spring and summer. Eco-Friendly Solutions Inc., based in Lewes, is the state’s exclusive dealer for Skeet-R-Gone, an environmentally friendly concentrated injection device designed for sprinkler systems.

Although used throughout the United States, Skeet-R-Gone is new to this region. “This is great for the Delmarva area,” said Christopher Jefferis, one of the owners.

Everyone knows that mosquitoes are frequent visitors to the marshes and grasslands of the Cape Region.

Jefferies said the system can be set up to operate automatically with the push of a button through a yard’s irrigation system (it takes about 60 seconds of application per zone to treat a yard), or a yard can be treated as needed before outdoor activities.

The solution can also be sprayed manually without the use of an irrigation system.

Jefferies said the concentration of the solution is only 1/10,000 of a percent.

“Kids can play in the sprinkler without hurting them,” Jefferis said.

“The solution is comprised of oils that smother the insects.”

Tracy Jefferis, another owner, said a customer introduced the system to them. “We visited the plant, met the chemist and became the exclusive dealer in the state,” she said.

She said it’s not the typical bug spray. The system can also be used to get rid of fleas, no-see-ums and other pests.

The company will have the system on display Saturday, June 21, during the Lewes Garden Tour.

Eco-Friendly Solutions is a merger of two companies – Total Package Landscaping Inc. and Delaware Landscaping & Design. The company still provides full landscaping and irrigation services. The third owner is Drew McGrady.
