The Rehoboth Beach Writers’ Guild will host a Night of Literary Prose, Poetry and Song, from 7:30 to 9:30 p.m., Tuesday, May 13, at Fish On in Five Points, Lewes. The event is free and open to the public.
The theme, Take Care, will feature readers exploring many aspects of caretaking, both serious and fun, from the hilarious moments involved in taking care of children to the often illuminating insights gleaned from taking care of one’s elderly parents to the new world negotiated in taking on the care of someone with a disability.
The Rehoboth Beach Writers’ Guild is a nonprofit association dedicated to fostering the literary arts in southern coastal Delaware by celebrating the talents of writers from diverse backgrounds in a variety of genres.
The featured reader of the event, Victor Greto, has been a journalist for 15 years and has won several awards for his work at the Colorado Springs Gazette, the South Florida Sun Sentinel and the News Journal, where he has worked as a feature writer since 2002.
Greto’s piece, “I can’t Take Care of You Anymore,” ran in the News Journal in May of last year, and was nominated by the paper for a Pulitzer Prize. “I can’t imagine anyone, whether currently a caregiver or not, who won’t relate to the struggles about which Greto writes,” said Rehoboth Beach Writers’ Guild president and novelist Maribeth Fischer, who will offer opening remarks.
“We’ve had readings that focused on the themes of love, family relationships, history, revolutionaries and humor; readings dealing with travel and men and heroes, and all touch on important things. This reading covers all of these things, and then some.”
In addition to Greto, readers include Sally Laux, a registered nurse and acupuncturist who will read from her recently completed memoir, “Then There Were Six,” about the deaths of two of her three brothers and the decision to become sole guardian of her 40-year-old younger brother, Matt, after he suffered traumatic brain injury.
Laux’s decision, which involved moving Matt from his home in Kansas to Delaware, is both timely (the number of traumatic brain injury patients in the country has been increasing exponentially in the past decade, in great part due to the war in Iraq) and revealing, as Laux learns to recognize the “now-Matt,” who is a very different brother from the “then-Matt.”
Karla Pahel, a poet, memoirist and songwriter, will read sketches from motherhood, a series of funny and insightful glimpses into what young children can teach about survival, resilience and the beauty of dreaming big. Juxtaposed with these vignettes will be those of Rehoboth Beach Writers’ Guild member Tom Hoyer, who illustrates through precise and beautifully rendered glimpses of his own parents.
The Night of Literary Prose, Poetry and Song represents the guild’s focus on making literature more accessible to a variety of people in the community by presenting it in an elegant and relaxed atmosphere.
Attendees are invited to dine during the reading, sampling the food for which Fish On has received numerous awards. Diners are encouraged to come early, as seating is limited.
