Sussex Tech students win SkillsUSA Awards

More than 80 Sussex Technical High School students brought home medals from the State SkillsUSA Awards Ceremony held in Dover April 8. The medals included 35 gold, 37 silver and 15 bronze places.

The Ravens also swept all three places in the Electronics Applications and Robotics and Automation Tech categories. Besides several of the winners receiving valuable scholarships, all Sussex Tech first-place winners are now eligible to compete at the National SkillsUSA competition this summer in Kansas.

Sussex Tech students who received state medals include the following individuals:

• Automotive Refinishing Technology: Gold – J.T. Tana, Lewes, Snap-On tool set and $5,000 scholarship; Bronze – Stephen Galvacky, Lewes, Snap-On tool set and $2,000 scholarship.

• Automotive Service Tech: Silver – Tyler Dickson, Bridgeville, Snap-On tool set and $14,500 in scholarships.

• Post-Secondary Automotive Service Tech: Gold – Joe Lewis, Delaware Tech-Owens; Silver – Joe Newell, Delaware Tech -Owens; Bronze – Paul Eck, Delaware Tech -Owens.

• Broadcast News: Gold – team of Anna Yelverton, Seaford; Kelsey Daisey, Millsboro; Courtenay Rickards, Ocean View; and Caitlin Stone, Bridgeville, $5,000 scholarship each; Silver – team of Brittany Cooper, Laurel; Megan Campbell, Laurel; Kristen Conner, Seaford; and Sarah Smith, Seaford, $5,000 scholarship each.

• Cabinetmaking: Gold – Josh Dickson, Bridgeville, $2,000 scholarship and DeWalt power tool; Silver – Axel Moore, Millsboro, $1,500 scholarship and DeWalt power tool.

• Carpentry: Silver – David Flaharty, Millsboro, $4,500 in scholarships and DeWalt power tool.

• Collision Repair Tech: Silver – Stephen Galvacky, Lewes, $14,500 in scholarships, Snap-On tool set and Kayfield gift certificate; Bronze – J.T. Tana, Lewes, $9,500 in scholarships, Snap-On tool set and Kayfield gift certificate.

• Community Service: Gold – team of Rachel Southmayd, Ocean View; Sara Baker, Millsboro; and Taylor Pridgeon, Fenwick Island.

• Criminal Justice: Silver – Terrell Hutchins, Seaford.

• Crime Scene Investigation: Silver – team of Justin Kahoe, Millsboro; Tommy Brennan, Millsboro; and Mike Cordrey, Millsboro.

• Diesel Equipment Tech: Gold – Ben Anderson, Laurel, $23,000 in scholarships and Snap-On tool set; Silver – Robert Chandler, Laurel, $14,500 in scholarships and Snap-On tool set.

• Electronics Applications: Gold – Chris Mitchell, Millsboro, $4,500 in scholarships; Silver – Devon Meidinger, Millsboro, $3,000 in scholarships; Bronze – Chris Pridgeon, Fenwick Island, $1,000 scholarship.

• Job Skill Demo-A: Silver – Paul Sisson, Georgetown, $4,500 in scholarships.

• Job Skill Demo-Open: Silver – Debbie Ryder, Milton, $4,500 in scholarships.

• Marine Service Tech: Gold – Ryelan Pavlik, Lewes, $7,000 in scholarships and Snap-On tool set; Silver – Kyle Casey, Seaford, $4,500 in scholarships and Snap-On tool set.

• Nail Care: Gold – Sharvelle Feddiman, Selbyville, Burmax awards and 1st State Academy award.
