The Georgetown commencement ceremony for Wilmington University has been postponed until 6 p.m., Wednesday, May 14, at the William A. Carter Partnership Center on Delaware Technical & Community College’s Owens Campus.
The ceremony was originally scheduled for Monday, May 12, but had to be changed because of inclement weather.
Wind gusts approaching 50 mph, torrential rain and flooding caused significant damage to the outdoor tent and stage set up for the commencement.
A total of 216 students from Wilmington University’s southern Delaware locations including Dover, Dover Air Force Base and Georgetown, were expected to graduate, earning degrees ranging from associate’s to doctoral.
Assistant Vice President of Wilmington University Dr. Thomas B. Cupples said, “The university has taken all the steps necessary to ensure the safety of our students and their families. Due to the inclement weather, the graduation ceremony has been rescheduled.”
The students expected to graduate Monday were alerted of the postponement via Wilmington University’s emergency alert system that was implemented in September 2007.
Heather O’Connell, vice president of enrollment management, said, “We sent out text messages and voice mail alerts to 216 students scheduled to participate in Monday’s graduation ceremony. We also sent alerts to 327 full-time staff and administrators, and 1,363 faculty who were to be in attendance.”
“This was an opportunity for Wilmington University to put to use our emergency alert system at a time when no lives were at stake,” Cupples said. We are pleased we can now effectively communicate vital information to our students, faculty and staff by using this effective system.”
