Dr. Rosario “Charito” Calvachi-Mateyko, a restorative justice practitioner based in Lewes and Lancaster, Pa., has been commissioned to deliver a specialized presentation at the First World-Wide Restorative Juvenile Justice Conference taking place Wednesday-Saturday, Nov. 4-7, in Lima, Peru.
Calvachi will present a paper on the understanding of restorative juvenile justice and the media from the perspective of the United States.
Calvachi, who holds a doctorate in law and a master’s degree in conflict transformation, has also been invited to participate in the Children’s Human Rights Conference taking place at the same time at the University of Lima.
Calvachi is a member of the 15-person Delaware Governor’s Advisory Committee on Hispanic Affairs and works providing training and facilitation of Circles, a restorative justice process, to organizations such as the Latin American Community Center in Wilmington, The Way Home and CREST programs in Sussex County and the Lancaster Area Victim Offender Reconciliation Program (LAVORP) in Pennsylvania.
In Pennsylvania, she serves on the Lancaster YWCA and LAVORP boards of directors, as well as on the Lancaster County Human Relations Commission. She is a certified staff trainer for the Pennsylvania Child Welfare System.
For the last decade she has maintained what is believed to be the only known Spanish-language radio program in America devoted to restorative justice, airing on NPR radio station WLCH 91.3 FM in Lancaster, and La Exitosa internet radio, 930 AM, Milford.
She has also volunteered to assist the National Public Radio affiliate WSDL 90.7 FM based at Salisbury University, Md., with in-depth reportage on local Hispanic issues for which she has earned the Best Investigative Story Award twice by the Chesapeake chapter of the Associated Press.
Calvachi has presented cultural programs for former Gov. Ruth Ann Minner in celebration of Hispanic Heritage Month and at Delaware and Pennsylvania colleges and universities. She is the author of the book and CD, “Latin American Christmas/Navidad Latinoamericana.”
