Small businesses asked to share
their challenges with lawmakers
A bipartisan legislative group, created to help Delaware’s small business community, is holding events in each county to further that objective.

The Sussex County meeting will be at noon, Wednesday, Nov. 4, at the Possum Point Players auditorium, 441 Old Laurel Road, Georgetown.

Rep. Dan Short, R-Seaford, and Rep. Bryon Short, D-Highland Woods, both of whom are small businessmen, formed the Small Business Caucus to unite members of the General Assembly who share a common concern about the welfare of small businesses in the First State.

“Small businesses are the backbone of Delaware’s economy,” said Bryon Short. “With more than 72,000 in the state, their success is vital to the strength of our economy. I was pleased by the response of the small business community to the Small Business Caucus’ initial efforts last spring and see these upcoming meetings as a significant part of furthering our mission of helping small businesses thrive in Delaware. I encourage small business owners to attend and offer their comments, concerns and ideas.”

House Minority Whip Dan Short said the meetings are needed to gauge the concerns of the small business sector.

“As small businessmen, Bryon and I have our own ideas about the problems faced by people who have to meet a payroll every week,” he said. “What we’re trying to do with these meetings is give small businessmen and women throughout the state a chance to tell us what’s impacting them most and give us ideas on how the General Assembly can help.”

Both legislators said small businesses have been increasingly burdened by stiffer regulations and higher costs – challenges that have become all the more exacerbated by the slumping economy and falling revenues.

They noted small businesses are collectively the largest employers in the state, so helping them succeed benefits all Delawareans.
