Diehard tailgaters enjoy ultimate new playground
The 2009-10 professional football season is well under way, and some diehard fans have found a tailgating experience in Delaware. Giant screen TVs, sports betting, authentic Tony Luke’s Philly cheesesteaks, cold beer and comfortable seats await the Sunday football fan in the Race & Sports Book at Dover Downs Hotel & Casino.

“Our facility has the relaxed, laid-back feel of a sports bar yet with all of the glamour of a Las Vegas sportsbook,” said Charlie Lockhart, vice president of horse racing. “We cater to both serious, experienced bettors as well as more casual wagerers looking for a great place to bet on professional football and horses. We accept three types of parlay bets on professional football games, from $2 to $3,000. Visitors have reacted positively, and turnout has increased weekly since we opened last month.”

Prime space in The Colonnade was retrofitted for the state-of-the-art race and sports book with enormous high-definition screens, an expansive oddsboard, a full-service wagering counter with experienced bet ambassadors and several freestanding bettor stations. Seating includes carrels for handicapping horses, high-top tables with TV screens, comfortable club chairs and a large, fully stocked bar with TVs.

Football and race fans who work up their appetites will find a menu to satisfy a giant-sized hunger. Featured prominently are true East Coast cheesesteaks made by Philly’s own Tony Luke. “It feels great to bring our products to Dover Downs Hotel & Casino,” said Tony Luke. “Tony Luke’s fits right in with the whole idea of the new sports betting complex. It is real food for the working class - comfort food, and we are honored to be part of that.”

The Race & Sports Book is open from noon to 1 a.m., Monday through Saturday, and from 10 a.m. to 1 a.m., Sunday. The third-floor simulcast area will be open for the live harness racing season beginning at 4 p.m. until the end of live racing at approximately 9:30 p.m., Sunday, Nov. 1.
