ABSTRACTIONS VI at Coastal Frameshop and Gallery, 36983 Rehoboth Avenue Extended, Unit B in Rehoboth Beach (on the service road near CVS) continues the gallery’s commitment to abstract work. With six annual renditions of the exhibition at this location, this year’s fresh face on abstract works is matched by a new mandated address.
Doing what abstraction does best - reinvent itself - artists Charlene Abele, Peggy Sampogna and Lee Wayne Mills conjure up whole worlds punctuated with rich colors and engaging textures. Abele won best in show at this year’s Members Fine Art Show at the Rehoboth Art League, and Sampogna remains a beloved part of the league’s Outdoor Show every August.
Mills, who was interim director at the league from July 2007 through August 2008, is now concentrating on his studio work. A recent piece was exhibited at the Provincetown Art Association and Museum. Each artist brings a unique point of view to the exhibition, and together, their works strike some handsome and revealing chords.
Several of Abele’s recent works have a haunting astral glow about them, as if new moons and old galaxies were reinventing the universe. Many of Mills’ new pieces juxtapose broad gestural markings that toss collage elements into a camouflage of activity. Sampogna’s newer works continue to build her abstract pictorial structures, but now with a softened, muted palette creating hovering plains of shimmering light and color.
There will be an artists’ reception from 3 to 6 p.m., Saturday, Nov. 7. Regular gallery hours are 10 a.m. to 5 p.m., Wednesday through Saturday and noon to 4 p.m., Sunday.
The gallery is closed on Monday and Tuesday but may be opened by appointment.
