More than 60 Broadway Bound students from the Clear Space Arts Institute will take the stage at 3 p.m., Sunday, Nov. 22, for the Spring Performing Arts Festival. The show takes place at the new theatre at Cape Henlopen High School in Lewes and all tickets are $5. The private voice and piano students of the institute perform at 1 p.m. in the theatre with free admission.
The Broadway Bound Program allows students in grades one through eight to rotate through 30-minute classes in dance, voice and acting taught by professional arts educators in weekly after-school sessions. Students demonstrating superior skills in this program may be asked to join Broadway Bound on Tour, an extension of the regular program that performs throughout Delmarva in the spring. The students have been looking forward to their end-of-semester performance as the faculty continues to raise their expectations of the students’ performance level on a weekly basis.
One Broadway Bound on Tour student, Meghan Hayward, a sixth-grader at Sussex Academy of Arts and Sciences, former Little Miss Milford and cast member of Clear Space’s upcoming holiday production of “Scrooge!” thoroughly enjoys being a part of Broadway Bound. “I enjoy Broadway Bound because it’s a way to incorporate singing, acting and dancing into one class, all of which I love to do!” she said. Meghan takes her study in the craft of musical theatre very seriously. She added, “Not only does it help me improve my onstage skills, but it helps me outside of the performing arts with discipline, strength and abilities which I can apply to my daily life.”
Some of the fully staged musical numbers featured in this semester’s show include “Too Darn Hot” from “Kiss Me Kate,” “Won’t You Charleston with Me?” from “The Boyfriend,” and “I Won’t Grow Up” from “Peter Pan.” The upcoming Performing Arts Festival will be the first to be held in the new Cape Henlopen Theatre, where Arts Institute classes are held.
Clear Space Executive Director Ken Skrzesz said, “The Arts Institute classes are now serving as a true preparatory program for students who are serious about pursuing acting, voice or dance in high school programs. The development of the Theatre Arts Academy at Cape Henlopen High School will allow students to transition smoothly from their years of study in Broadway Bound to an academy of high academic and artistic standards.”
Students and parents of Broadway Bound as well as the Theatre Arts Academy at Cape Henlopen High School are thrilled about this outlook.
Jen Hayward, Meghan’s mom, spoke about the benefits of Broadway Bound for Meghan when she said, “Broadway Bound gives Meghan the gift of musical theatre in an environment that feels safe and comfortable to learn in and explore through creative expression.”
With the fall semester of Broadway Bound coming to an end with the Performing Arts Festival, students will begin registering for the spring session of Broadway Bound classes soon.
