State police detectives are investigating a rash of burglaries that have plagued Cape Region businesses for the past month. Cpl. Angela Garnsey, state police spokeswoman, said there were five complaints filed the last week of October and one the first week of November from businesses that all shared similar experiences.
Garnsey said Kick’n Chicken in the Food Lion shopping center in Rehoboth Beach was the first target of the week when someone pitched a brick through the front-door window to gain entry the evening of Oct. 26. Once inside, the burglar removed cash from the register. The same thing happened between the evening of Oct. 28 and early morning Oct. 29, at the Kick’n Chicken in the Happy Harry’s shopping center on Savannah Road in Lewes. Someone threw a brick through that store’s glass door, entered and removed cash from the register.
The next incident occurred between the evening of Oct. 28 and morning of Oct. 29, when someone threw a brick through the front door of Zorba’s Greek restaurant in the same shopping center where the first Kick’n Chicken burglary occurred. Zorba’s was hit again in the same manner between the evening of Saturday, Oct. 31, and morning of Sunday, Nov. 1. In the first case, the burglar took money from the register, and in the second case, the thief stole money from a donation box.
A fifth case occurred between 11 p.m., Oct. 30, and the morning of Oct. 31, at Kenny’s Garage on Broadkill Road in Milton. Garnsey said someone used a decorative landscaping brick to smash the front door of the business. The burglar removed a small sum of cash from inside.
November started with a hit at 3:31 a.m., Monday, Nov. 2, at El Gran Charro Mexican store and restaurant on DuPont Highway outside Georgetown. Garnsey said someone threw a brick through the front door, which caused both front windows to shatter also. The burglar removed cigarettes from inside.
This rash of burglaries may have started the evening of Oct. 2, when someone used either a rock or piece of concrete to smash a window at Surf Bagel, located at Five Points. Overstuffed Sandwiches on Route 9 and Baker Petroleum on Gravel Hill Road were hit in similar manners Oct. 23.
“The community can help us with this problem,” said Garnsey. “If people see something that doesn’t appear normal, they should always call it in to the police. Don’t think it’s nothing, because it very well could be - especially when it is a suspicious person or vehicle.”
