Lady Vikings clinch Henlopen
crown with win over Milford
Convincing 8-2 win over Bucs
Double stack take it back!

Cape goalie Veronica D’Amico brought her “A Game” and sliding double stack saves and it’s a good thing, according to Cape coach Nicole Catanzaro, who saw Milford seize momentum after a corner and Devin Price goal at 24:42 off an assist from Kaci Coveleski.

The injected pass from Jacki Coveleski was settled by Abbey Hillgoss who passed to Kaci who found Devin Price who went far post for the score and a 1-0 Cape lead.

“After our first goal, Milford came back hard and momentum looked to be in their favor. However, Veronica came up big with one of her stack saves,” said Catanzaro. “She is so gutsy and full of drive.  It seemed to me that we were just a bit off with our footwork, our speed, our hustle, our passing and our defense.”

Cape would go on to score six unanswered goals in the first half showing crazy good and unselfish stick work inside the circle. The short passing game has been a daily coaching point of coaches Catazaro and Kay Miller.

The goals, times and assists in the first half were Devin Price (Abbey Hilligoss) at 24:26, Devin Price (Hilligoss) at 13:50, Hilligoss at 7:59, Jacki Coveleski (Devin Price) at 5:40, Price (Taylor Trimmer) at 4:31 and Jacki Coveleski (Hannah Pepper) 00:48.

“Yes, the girls got it done when they were in the circle, which is a positive aspect to focus on,” Catanzaro said. “So when you have a score like 8-2, of course people would think that we played well, but our play was just enough to get the job done.  We will need to bring it to a different level for the next couple of games.”

The second half saw the Cape scoring machine slow down as Savannah Becker scored on a pair of corners at 6:24 and 4:57, the ball put nicely on her stick by Captain Nicki Parsley.

Devin Price scored her fourth goal of the game at 2:13 and Rebecca Pepper sent one home off an assist from Kaci Coveleski for the final score of 8-2.

Cape outshot Milford 19 to 9 while Veronica D’Amico made seven saves including a few of those painful-looking double stackers. Sarah Ryder had eight saves for Milford.

NOTES - Cape clinched its second straight Henlopen Conference championship with the win and one makeup game remaining at Polytech Wednesday, Nov. 4.

Even a monumental upset by Polytech would leave Cape with the tiebreaker over Sussex Tech.

The junior varsity girls fell behind for the first time this season on a goal by Melissa Melvin of Milford but answered with two in the first half, Anna Frederick, 5:50 and Emily Baptiste (Frederick), 3:25 and two in the second, by Paige Reed (Frederick) and Alexa Coverdale. The junior varsity is unbeaten with a game remaining at Polytech.

“I would like to congratulate the JV team for playing like experienced players,” Catanzaro said.  “They are passing the ball well, and they are putting the ball in the net.  Keep up the good work.”
