Delaware State Police Collision Reconstruction Unit members are investigating a fatal crash that occurred on Route 113 at Sussex 224, one mile north of Ellendale.
Cpl. Jeff Whitmarsh, state police spokesman, said the crash occurred at approximately 10:30 p.m., Friday, Oct. 30.
Whitmarsh said investigators have the following information so far: William Gibbs, 42, of Georgetown, was driving a 1997 Ford Taurus. Caleb Ashley, 20, of Lincoln, was driving a 2010 Ford F-250. Major Foster, 45, of Lincoln, was driving a 1997 GMC Sierra.
Kimberly Copes, 28, of Georgetown, was driving a 2001 Chevrolet Venture, and Wayne Ling, 52, of Berlin, Md., was driving a 2002 Mazda Tribute.
Whitmarsh said investigators determined the Taurus was traveling northbound on Route 113, approaching the intersection of Sussex 224. The F-250 was traveling in the left lane next to and slightly behind the Taurus.
The GMC was traveling west on Sussex 224, approaching the intersection with Route 113, but it failed to stop for a clearly posted stop sign and drove into the path of the Taurus and the F-250. It collided with both of them.
After the crash, Foster ran from the scene on foot. He ran north on Route 113 in the right southbound lane of travel. He was then struck by the driver’s side mirror of the Chevrolet Venture, which was traveling southbound.
This impact knocked Foster to the ground, where he was struck by the Mazda Tribute.
Foster was pronounced dead at the scene.
The only other person injured was Gibbs, who was transported to Beebe Medical Center with a wrist injury.
Whitmarsh said investigators subsequently learned Foster was driving with a suspended license. They have not yet determined whether he was impaired at the time of the crash, which remains under investigation. No arrests were made.
