Music school to present
family concert Nov. 7 in Milford
The Music School of Delaware will present a new Family Concert Series this season with unique concerts designed for the youngest of concertgoers.

Multiple grants awarded to music school
The Music School of Delaware was awarded a $5,000 grant from DuPont to support its 2009-10 Early Childhood outreach instruction program.

The outreach program provides early childhood music education to children ages 2 to 7 in statewide schools, daycare centers and preschools. Last year the music school served nearly 600 children, approximately 30 percent of whom were from low-income families, at outreach locations throughout the state.

In addition to the DuPont grant, the Music School of Delaware has also received grants from Verizon and Valero in the amounts of $2,850 and $1,000, respectively, to fund website improvements; from Target in the amount of $1,000 to support the music school’s first of four family concerts, “Webster the Musical Spider”; and from Principal Financial Group in the amount of $500 to support the school’s Cultural Crossroads concert series.

These affordable and educational concerts will engage children in live musical adventures that will entertain the entire family.

The series begins in November with a performance of “Webster the Musical Spider” in Milford. The popular production tells the tale of Webster, a spider, who is ridiculed because he prefers to spend his time playing music on his web rather than hunting for bugs to eat. In a surprising turn of events, Webster saves the day when his music soothes the large, hungry birds that come to prey on the spider family.

“Webster the Musical Spider” will feature special guests Serafin String Quartet; Valerie Von Pechy Whitcup, composer and harpist; Michael Larkin, narrator; and Lynne Cooksey, flute. “Webster the Musical Spider” is sponsored in part by Target.

The Music School will present “Webster the Musical Spider” for ages 4 and up at 3 p.m., Saturday, Nov. 7, at the Milford Branch, 10 S. Walnut St., Milford.
