The legend of Judy Garland will come alive Saturday, Nov. 7, at the historic Milton Theatre. The performance is at 8 p.m. and the doors will open at 7:15.
Singer Sue Matthews’ expressive, honey-toned voice has captivated audiences and critics alike over her 30-year career as a jazz standards recording artist and performer. “The Songs of Judy” is Matthews’ celebration of the career of one of America’s most beloved stars, in which Garland’s life and heartfelt performances are celebrated.
The program is highlighted by songs such as “The Trolley Song,” “The Man that Got Away,” “Be a Clown” and “Over the Rainbow.”
Matthews’ career has taken her to the top jazz clubs, concert halls and music festivals. She has been the featured performer with many orchestras, and her international appearances have taken her from Argentina to Hungary and Ireland. She delivers this show’s repertoire in her own style with a respect for Judy Garland’s everlasting stamp on each and every song. Matthews’ powerful performance is enhanced by the story of Garland’s career that is threaded throughout the musical numbers.
Matthews’ musical director, Stef Scaggiari, heads a band with arrangements true to Garland’s style. Scaggiari is a pianist/composer whose music has been heard every Sunday on NPR’s “Weekend Edition” since 1988. He has appeared as the featured soloist with many major orchestras, and his international performances have taken him from the Saluzzo Festival in Italy to the Heineken festival in Holland. While under contract with Concord Records, Scaggiari toured with the Carol Sloan Group, the Modern Jazz Quartet, the Count Basie All-Stars and the Mel Torme Group. He has also been featured at the Monterey Jazz Festival in California.
Matthews and Scaggiari have recorded and performed together successfully for many years. They have produced tribute programs to Duke Ellington, Cole Porter and George Gershwin.
It is fitting that the tribute to such a giant in musical history will be performed in the historic Milton Theatre. Built in the early 20th century, and lovingly restored, the Milton Theatre is a wonderful performing space and the venue for not only musical events, but theatre performances and films. Located at 110 Union St., it has been called “the busiest little theatre in Sussex County.”
Tickets for “The Songs of Judy” are $20 for adults, and $18 for students and seniors 65 and over. Tickets can be purchased by calling the theatre at 302-684-3400, or online at miltontheatre.org
