Gallery 50 to exhibit
photographs by Harold Ross
Show to open with reception Nov. 13
Gallery 50 on Wilmington Avenue in Rehoboth Beach will present an exhibit of photographs by Harold Ross, Extraordinary Light [Found] Objects Revealed, from Friday, Nov. 13, to Friday, Dec. 11. An artist’s reception will be held from 4 to 7 p.m., Saturday, Nov. 14.

“Almost 20 years of experimenting with the specialized technique of light painting has given me the ability to show subjects in a ‘different light’ so that viewers can appreciate them in an unexpected way,” said Ross. “This ‘different light’ is meticulously applied in each image and is very sculptural in nature. My process elevates and reinforces the notion that discarded objects can have an extraordinary beauty.

“Light painting requires working in a completely dark studio, opening the camera for an extended period of time, and ‘painting’ the light onto the subject. This reveals greater shape, texture and color, and is very much like sculpting with light.

“The negative effects of time have often been addressed by artists and writers. I’m convinced that beauty isn’t necessarily diminished when something is ‘past its prime.’ In fact, I feel that there is an innate beauty that only the patina of time can reveal.”

Also new to the gallery are seasonal folk works by Pastore’s mother, Pittsburgh-based artist Phyllis Pastore. She paints images of Santa and St. Nicholas on cypress tree roots.
The roots, which grow out from shallow waters, are harvested and then placed in a kiln for drying.

After sanding, a base paint is applied and then images of different renditions of St. Nicholas are painted with acrylic paints. Her work has been recognized by the Historical Society of Western Pennsylvania.

They are perfect for collectors of St. Nicholas as well as great gifts.

The gallery is located at 50 Wilmington Ave. in Rehoboth Beach. A preview of the show can be seen at Gallery 50. For more information, call 302-227-2050. The gallery is closed on Tuesdays and Wednesdays.
