The Petite Gallery at Josephine Keir Ltd. will host a dual exhibition with two select groups of Japanese prints on view from Friday, Nov. 6 to Monday, Nov. 30.
On loan from a private collector are early to mid-19th century woodblock prints depicting actors of the Kabuki theatre. The prints are characterized by the dynamic design and vibrant color typical of that era. These include work by master artists Toyokuni III and Kuniyoshi. Of particular interest is a small print of three actors, possibly by Toyokuni I, adapted from a sketch by the great artist Sharaku.
An eclectic group of prints created in the 20th century range in subject from figurative and landscape to abstraction. The contemporary prints vary greatly in process as well as subject, with various printing mediums from color woodblock and silkscreen to the beautiful velvet-black mezzotint engravings and etchings by the artists Koichi Sakamoto and Tanaka.Ryohei.
A number of the prints created in the 20th century will be available for purchase, as will older restrikes of early prints.
