Child dies after crash at Midway intersection
A 4-year-old Virginia girl died Saturday, Nov. 7, following a three-vehicle crash on the northbound lane of Route 1 in front of the Midway Shopping Center.

Sgt. Walter Newton, state police spokesman, said at 1:10 p.m., a 2007 Toyota Tundra pickup truck driven by Lisa M. Drake, 37, of Summerville, S.C., failed to stop and plowed into the rear of a stopped 2001 Honda Odyssey minivan, driven by Malcolm L. D’Souza, 42, of Springfield, Va.

The collision forced the minivan into the rear of another stopped vehicle, a 2007 Toyota Camry, driven by Ronald Reese, 77, of Harbeson.

Both vehicles were stopped in traffic near the signal at the intersection of Route 1 and Melson Road.

A passenger in the minivan, Victoria A. D’Souza, who was in a child seat, was injured and taken to Beebe Medical Center in Lewes, where she later died, Newton said.

Drake, who was at fault in the crash, was treated and released from the hospital. The driver of the minivan was also injured and admitted to Beebe Medical Center, and an unnamed front-seat passenger also received injuries.

Newton said all three drivers were wearing seat belts.

Route 1 was closed and traffic was detoured for about two hours.

As of press time, no charges had been filed. Alcohol use is not suspected, and the crash remains under investigation, Newton said.
