| St. Jude the Apostle Parish in Lewes will host acclaimed astronomer Dr. James Mullaney, who will present a dynamically illustrated program – “The Heavens Declare” - on the divine significance of the cosmos at 7 p.m., Friday, Nov. 20, in the Parish Life Center, 152 Tulip Drive just north of Five Points.
For more than 50 years, Mullaney has been a celestial evangelist, enabling more than a million people of every age and background to see and appreciate the majesty of the night sky and to ponder who made and sustains it.
He has published hundreds of articles and five books, and achieved much renown in the field of astronomy as curator of the Buhl Planetarium, director of the DuPont Planetarium, contributor to Carl Sagan’s series “Cosmos,” and fellow of the Royal Astronomical Society of London.
Mullaney will conduct this tour of the universe emphasizing its awesome power, beauty and order, and he will discuss how religious and scientific understanding of the cosmos relate, especially in light of the recent images and speculations produced by the refurbished Hubble Telescope and the Vatican’s “Pope Scope.”
He will also address the issue of extraterrestrial life and humanity’s place in creation – people’s connection with the stars. Participants will be invited to ask questions and, weather permitting, to observe the night sky through a telescope.
There will be opportunity for a free-will offering.
