Lewes Historical Society to kick
off art show with Feb. 12 preview
POSTPONED
Anyone who has the winter blues or is looking to break out of the same old routine can join the Lewes Historical Society from 5 to 8 p.m., Friday Feb. 12, for the preview party for the Presidents’ Day weekend art show at the Cape May-Lewes Ferry Terminal on Cape Henlopen Drive, Lewes.

The show continues through Sunday, Feb. 14. Named Best Place to View Art in Delaware 2009 by Delaware Today magazine, the show has grown to enjoy a reputation for quality pieces in a stunning bayside setting. The 2010 artists have agreed to donate at least 25 percent of their sales to the society again this year.

The Seventh Annual Lewes Historical Society Fine Art Show & Sale will welcome approximately 40 extraordinary regional artists in a venue perfect for art with breathtaking views of Delaware Bay and the local lighthouses. The 2010 show is sponsored by Wilgus Associates; Larry Fifer Esq.; GMB Architects/Engineers; Coldwell Banker; and Schab & Barnett; other sponsorship opportunities are still available.

Abraxas Hudson of Milton has been named the 2010 featured artist. Growing up in coastal Delaware fostered the artist’s great love and appreciation for the sea. Not surprisingly, many of his works are inspired by the Delaware coast. “First Light,” the artist’s debut print, is a dramatic sunrise portrait of the Cape Henlopen Lighthouse as it appeared in 1924. The print was released in 1997 and rapidly sold out. The painting can also be found featured on the Cape Rosé wine label from the Nassau Valley Vineyard.

Abraxas will feature new, original pencil sketches of the Delaware coast as well as works from his recent trip to Arcadia National Park in Maine. Prints of his wonderfully detailed oils will be available for purchase as well.

Lewes native and restaurant owner Matt DiSabatino’s Striper Bites, Kindle and Half Full are participating in the 2010 preview party. “Matt’s restaurants are well known, and now he is a neighbor of ours with Kindle across the street from the Cannonball House Lewes Maritime Museum,” Society Executive Director Mike DiPaolo said. “We’re excited that he is participating again this year.” Other restaurants are coming on board, and the preview party will once again be a fun-filled evening under the soaring ceilings and airy, glass-enclosed spaces of the terminal.

Tickets for the preview party cost $25 per person in advance or $30 at the door. Ticket cost includes heavy hors d’oeuvres, wine and beer, live music and an opportunity to meet the artists. Preview tickets may be ordered by mail, Lewes Historical Society, 110 Shipcarpenter St., Lewes, DE 19958; or phone, 645-7670; or purchased at the Lewes Chamber of Commerce on Kings Highway or Puzzles on Front Street.

The show will be open 8 a.m. to 8 p.m., Saturday, Feb. 13, and 8 a.m. to 3 p.m., Sunday Feb. 14.
