| The Alzheimer’s Association Delaware Valley chapter sponsors training for caregiving professionals and family members. The association has several training session scheduled for this spring:
Staff training March 23
Dementia Caregiving: Search for the Right Way is a seven-hour program designed to provide staff with a basic understanding of the changes in memory, communication, function and behavior that occur as a result of cognitive disease and the appropriate intervention strategies to enhance the care they provide to individuals with Alzheimer’s and related dementias.
The training will be from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m., Tuesday, March 23, at Heritage in Dover, 1203 Walker Road, Dover. Preregistration is required by contacting Siobhan Gannon, associate director of professional outreach, at 302-514-6510 or Siobhan.gannon@alz.org.
Professional training March 31
Activity Based Alzheimer Care: Building a Therapeutic Program is an interactive program designed for professional caregivers, including activity professionals, nursing assistants, social workers, nurses and unit leaders who work with individuals with dementia in all care settings. The program meets the criteria for seven hours of continuing education from the National Certification Council for Activity Professionals.
The training will be from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m., Wednesday, March 31, at the Alzheimer’s Association Julie H.C. Bailey Training Center, 100 S. Main St., Suite 211, Smyrna. Participants will learn about the significance of activities for individuals with Alzheimer’s disease and other forms of dementia, as well as how to adapt activities and the environment to better meet individual needs. Participants will also learn a variety of ways to evaluate current activity programs. Preregistration is required by contacting Gannon.
Family training April 8
The Family Caregiver Education Series is scheduled four times per year in each of Delaware’s three counties. Brandywine Assisted Living at Fenwick Island will host training from 8:30 a.m. to 4 p.m., Thursday, April 8. The program gives a medical overview and addresses legal and financial issues, challenging symptoms and daily care issues, and provides information on getting help.
This training for family caregivers is free, and Methodist Manor House will provide lunch. Preregistration is required by Friday, April 2.
