Aspiring genealogists are invited to attend the workshop Cracking the Code: Reading Historic Documents, from noon to 2 p.m., Saturday, March 20, at The Old State House, 25 The Green, Dover.

Presented by Madeline Dunn, curator of education and historian for the Delaware Division of Historical and Cultural Affairs, this hands-on document interpretation workshop will feature instruction in understanding the historic context of 18th and 19th century records.

Guests will sit inside the majestic Old State House and receive key information on understanding primary resources and conducting genealogical research.

Common writing trends, terminology and typical phraseology will be highlighted, and sample worksheets will assist participants in organizing information extracted from primary resource documents.

As history detectives, participants will examine a variety of documents including deeds, manumissions, wills and probate inventories. Obtaining family information through unusual sources will also be discussed.
