The Shaffer Family Foundation will highlight each of the Beneficiaries for The 3rd Annual Rally for Our First Responders which will take place on Saturday, June 1, 2024 (rain date is Sunday, June 2, 2024).
Sussex County Paramedic Association is an organization within their division, that is member based.
They sponsor the Stephanie Calloway Scholarship. This scholarship is awarded to a student or students of the community that wishes to pursue paramedicine as a career. This was established to honor Stephanie Calloway who died in the line of duty.
Since then, they continue to award two students, who have applied, the scholarship and help them pursue a career that Stephanie loved. They also promote education and recently contributed to the Delaware State Wide Training for all 3 counties in an effort to increase the knowledge of Trauma injuries and treatment. This was taught by a well-known trauma and clinical field surgeon from University Of Penn Hospital who brought and shared her knowledge with all the paramedics of the State Of Delaware.
Classes like this help increase the knowledge and treatment expertise needed to help members in our community in their time of need.
They also help contribute where needed to paramedic hardships, recently, one of their paramedics was burned trying to make a heroic rescue of a subject trapped in a house fire. He received burns to his hands, so to help alleviate any burdens to him and his family, the association donated a small donation to him and his family for groceries or travel coverages to doctor's appointments during his further care.
It is situations like this that the association donates and helps not only our own members, but they have assisted other fire departments in the community with donations for cancer fundraising for an ill EMT.
They also adopt two families for the holidays and assist with making a holiday happy for the children. The association is here for what needs to be done to help take care of our own as needed.
