The Journey of Lucy Kaplansky
Lucy Kaplansky’s musical journey began in the intimate folk clubs of Chicago during her teenage years before she made her way to New York City, where she found community among iconic songwriters like Suzanne Vega and Steve Forbert. Known for her beautiful harmonies, Lucy quickly became a sought-after singing partner, most notably with fellow artist Shawn Colvin. Despite early predictions of stardom, Lucy made a bold decision to step away from the music scene to pursue a doctorate in Clinical Psychology.
After building a successful career as a psychologist, Lucy couldn’t shake her musical roots. She lent her voice to numerous albums, including Colvin’s Grammy-winning "Steady On" and Nanci Griffith’s "Little Love Affairs." The call of music was too strong to resist! Eventually, she re-entered the music industry with the release of her acclaimed album The Tide in 1994, marking her triumphant return to the stage and studio. With a career that spans decades, Lucy has become a mainstay in the folk and Americana scene, enchanting audiences with her warmth, authenticity, and stunning lyrics.
Opening with Heart: Doug Mishkin
Kicking off the evening is Doug Mishkin, a gifted singer-songwriter known for his heartfelt tribute to Woody Guthrie with the song “Woody’s Children.” Doug’s passion for folk music runs deep, inspired by legends such as Pete Seeger and Tom Paxton. His songs explore a range of themes—civil rights, personal love stories, and social commentary—showcasing his belief that a good song tells a powerful story, no matter the genre.
From “Make Those Waters Part” to “If They’d Been Black,” Doug’s music resonates with authenticity and profound meaning. He skillfully blends the traditions of folk with modern sensibilities, while also tackling pressing social issues through his poignant lyrics. His two albums, Woody’s Children and Climbing That Ladder, exemplify his ability to weave personal experiences with universal truths, offering listeners a deeply engaging experience.
