With the current measles outbreak in Texas, many of my patients have been asking me if they should be worried.
So here is what you should know
What is Measles? Measles is a highly contagious viral disease that can cause serious health complications, especially for young children and those with weakened immune systems.
Symptoms to Watch For:
- High fever
- Cough, runny nose, and sore throat
- Red, watery eyes
- A rash that usually starts on the face and spreads
How It Spreads: Measles spread through coughing, sneezing, and even just being in close contact with someone who has it. It can stay in the air for up to two hours after an infected person leaves the area.
Vaccination is Key: The MMR (Measles, Mumps, Rubella) vaccine is highly effective in preventing measles. If you or your child haven’t received the MMR vaccine, now is the time to get it!
If you were born before 1957, you are presumed immune due to likely having had measles or having been exposed.
If you were born after 1957 and you are unsure if you had the measles or unsure of you vaccination status you have 2 options:
- You can just get a booster. There is no harm to getting a booster even if you are already immune. However, the MMR is a live vaccine, so if you are immunocompromised, then you cannot get it. Additionally, if you have had trouble with other vaccines in the past, talk to you doctor first.
- Your other option is to have a measles titer checked. This is a blood test that tests the level of measles antibodies in your system. It can be done at any lab and does not require any special preparation or fasting. The only downfall is that insurance might not cover it. The out-of-pocket cost for a measles titer ranges from $129 - $135
