The Power of Building Strength As You Age

February 28, 2025

Have you ever wondered why doctors are constantly stressing the importance of exercise with you?

No, we don't want all our patients to be bodybuilders or supermodels.  But we do want our patients to be able to do all the things they might take for granted as they age.  We want you to be able to safely get in and out of bed, or up and down from the sofa or chairs. We want you to be able to dress and shower safely; to go up and downstairs and step up on curbs without falling.

Unfortunately, a natural part of aging is loss of muscle mass, strength and a decline in balance and dexterity.  This process happens slowly from our late 30's to 60's and declines more rapidly from our late 60'sonward.

So, what's the point of exercise if this is inevitable?

Well, two things.

1.  The more strength you start with, the better you will be as you age.  Think of it this way.  If you compare your muscle strength to a gallon water, and we know we are going to lose half a gallon with age, but it takes 1/4 gallon to have enough to do all the things we need to do (shower, walk, etc.). If you start out with only a half gallon, you won't have enough left to do those things.  If you start with ¾ of a gallon, you'll just barely have enough to do those things, but it will be difficult. But if you start with a full gallon, or maybe even more than a gallon, then you will be able todo all those things without any difficulty AND do other things you might enjoy, like traveling, playing with grandkids, etc.

2.  Even if you are already in your 60s, 70s, or 80s, you can improve on or maintain you muscle strength, dexterity, and balance with regular exercise.  The best exercise regimen is one which incorporates Cardio, Strength Training, Balance exercises, and stretching.
