What is a septic tank Riser?

March 28, 2025

What’s a Septic Tank Riser and why have them installed?

When a septic company is called to pump out your tank and no lids are visible, they must dig up your yard to get to the job done. This can get expensive when they charge for the extra labor. Digging can be backbreaking if you do it yourself and often only the professionals know where exactly the access lids are located beneath the ground.

In March of 2002, DNREC (Delaware Department of Natural Resources and environmental Control) required all new systems to have risers installed with any septic permit. A few years later, regulations also required that risers be installed as part of any septic system upgrade.

Risers can be made of plastic, fiberglass or concrete and a set can be installed in as little as a couple hours. The risers create a vertical, watertight portal at the surface for easy access to the septic tank for pumping out and inspection. Risers also make the service cleaner as dirt often fall back into the tank when putting a below ground level lid back in place. Risers come in different sizes to accommodate the depths to the tank and precast opening of the tank. There is an initial cost to put risers on, but in the long run, it will save the appearance of your lawn and not having to pay for the extra digging labor.
