WIRING MONEY FOR SETTLEMENT
If you are buying or selling a home you may be wiring money to the attorneys office.
This is so important if you are going to be wiring money. Most of the time when you are buying a home you will need to wire the majority of the money prior to settlement.
There are big time scams going on right now where people are losing their money to crooks.
The way it works is the bad guys gain control over the email account of the contact person at the attorneys office and then have you wire the money to them. This is happening on a pretty frequent basis right now. People are losing their life savings with this scam.
So here is what you need to do. ALWAYS and I repeat call the attorneys (and don’t email) office and confirm that the instructions you received are the current ones. If there are any changes to the instructions the attorney will call you to confirm this. Or call your real estate agent and have them do the leg work of verifying the information. BE SUOER CAREFUL.
When in doubt don’t do it. Just don’t do it. It is too risky.
