‘The Devils Will Get No Rest’ author talk set April 14

April 6, 2024

The Lewes Public Library discussion series, Fireside Chats: Exploring the Roosevelt Legacy, will host a conversation with author James B. Conroy at 5 p.m., Sunday, April 14, in the library’s fireplace area, 111 Adams Ave., Lewes, and online via Zoom. The series is hosted by Paul Sparrow, former director of the FDR Presidential Library and Museum.

The two will discuss Conroy’s new book, “The Devils Will Get No Rest: FDR, Churchill, and the Plan That Won the War.”

The book is the first full account of the Casablanca Conference of January 1943, the secret 10-day parley in Morocco where Roosevelt and Churchill hammered out a winning strategy at the tipping point of World War II. Conroy’s account is a master class in strategy from the legendary statesmen, generals and admirals who overcame their differences, transformed their alliance from a necessity to a bond, forged a war-winning plan and glimpsed the postwar world.

Browseabout Books will be on hand with books for purchase, and Conroy will conduct a book signing after the discussion.

Seating is limited, and registration is required. To register for either online or in-person attendance, go to lewes.lib.de.us or call 302-645-2733.

An honorary fellow of the Massachusetts Historical Society, Conroy is a former member of the Air National Guard and a graduate of Georgetown University Law Center. He practiced law until 2020 and previously worked as a Senate press secretary and congressional chief of staff. Conroy’s book, “Lincoln’s White House,” shared the Lincoln Prize and won the Abraham Lincoln Institute’s annual book award.
