‘The Sum of Us’ community book circle set Sept. 28
The Southern Delaware Alliance for Racial Justice, Delaware Community Foundation and Lewes Public Library will present a discussion about “The Sum of Us: What Racism Costs Everyone and How We Can Prosper Together” by Heather McGhee in a hybrid in-person/online event at 6 p.m., Tuesday, Sept. 28, at the library.
McGhee is an expert in economic and social policy, specializing in the American economy. In “The Sum of Us,” McGhee describes how, despite its position as one of the world’s most advanced economies, America has time and time again created policies that routinely fail its people, from the 2008 financial crisis, to crippling student debt, to the continued lack of universal healthcare. She finds the common thread and the driver of inequality is racism – affecting everyone, not just people of color. With compassion, intelligence and great care, McGhee journeys across the country exploring what is lost when people buy into the zero-sum paradigm: the idea that progress for some must come at the expense of others.
“Believe it or not, we are connected. ‘The Sum of Us’ explains how and why,” said moderator Dr. Marlene A. Saunders, co-vice chair of SDARJ. The event is part of SDARJ’s monthly book and film discussion group in collaboration with the DCF 2021 Book Circle program.
Registration is required at lewes.lib.de.us on the Virtual Programs for Adults page. Participants will be asked to select virtual or in-person attendance. Copies of the book are available for check-out at the library before the event.
