‘Lightship’ StoryWalk in place at Canalfront Park until June 5

Visitors invited to stroll and read 20-panel installation
April 27, 2022

The Lewes Public Library and the Overfalls Foundation welcome visitors to Lewes Canalfront Park to experience a StoryWalk featuring the children’s book “Lightship,” through Sunday, June 5.

“Lightship,” by Caldecott Medal-winning author and illustrator Brian Floca, offers a glimpse into the lives of those who lived and worked on lightships, highlighting the important role the ships played, the mechanics of their operations, and the challenges faced by the crew.

The StoryWalk creates an interactive outdoor reading experience, with each page of the book on a separate mounted panel in the park. As visitors walk along the path, they read the story page by page. The 20-panel installation invites visitors to engage in the book together and learn about life on a lightship through Floca’s simple prose and beautiful watercolor illustrations.

“StoryWalks provide a wonderful opportunity for families to engage in a book together, and Brian Floca’s ‘Lightship’ is the perfect fit for us here in Lewes at the Lightship Overfalls,” said Jennifer Noonan, children’s librarian at the Lewes Public Library. “Together with the Overfalls Foundation, and with generous support from Groome Church, we are thrilled to bring this StoryWalk to Canalfront Park.”

Floca will join the Overfalls season opening celebration at Canalfront Park for a book signing and author event presented by Browseabout Books and the Lewes Public Library Saturday, May 21. More details will be forthcoming.

StoryWalks were first created by Anne Ferguson of Montpelier, Vt., and developed in collaboration with the Kellogg-Hubbard Library. They have since taken off nationwide in a movement to bring reading outdoors.

The Overfalls Foundation works to preserve, teach and honor the United States lightship service and the maritime history of the community through the preservation and display of the Lightship Overfalls (LV-118) and its collection of associated maritime artifacts.

The StoryWalk is supported by a generous partnership with Groome Church of Lewes.
