‘Mayor Cupcake’ coming to Milton

Series to feature locally made movie March 18
March 10, 2011

Rehoboth Beach Film Society and Milton Historical Society conclude the 2011 Delmarva Roots series with a screening of “Mayor Cupcake” at 7 p.m., Friday, March 18, in the Milton Fire Hall.

Written and directed by local entrepreneur Alex Pires, “Mayor Cupcake” was shot in Sussex County. Pires will be present to introduce the film and conduct a post-screening discussion.

This comedic drama features Lea Thompson as Mary Maroni, a cupcake maker and mother of three. She resides in sleepy Bridgeville and is happy with life the way it is: simple. Her life revolves around her family and a handful of quirky town characters who hang out at Jimmy’s Grille where she sells her cupcakes.

Mary’s life is turned upside down when daughter Lana secretly registers her as a candidate in the upcoming mayoral election. In a strange twist of fate, Mary becomes mayor, and she reluctantly takes office only to discover the town is in jeopardy due to all the years of corruption and cronyism under her predecessor’s leadership.

Although uneducated and politically naïve, Mary plunges into her new role, setting up office in her bakery. She relies on her gut instincts to help her run the town, resulting in an unusual style of governing that attracts national attention, a few enemies and the nickname Mayor Cupcake. Can Mary save Bridgeville from disaster while juggling her bakery, her political opponents, a family scandal and the media spotlight?

Tickets are $4 and can be purchased online at rehobothfilm.com, and by calling the Rehoboth Beach Film Society at 645-9095, Ext. 1, or the Milton Historical Society at 684-1010. The Milton Fire Hall is at 116 Front St., Milton.
