100 Women Who Care gives $16K to Friends of Sussex CASA

April 13, 2024

Members of 100 Women Who Care Southern Delaware gathered March 25 at Lewes Public Library to present an award of $11,475 to Friends of Sussex CASA. Susan O’Doherty, Friends board president, was there to accept the award along with other Friends board members.

This is the largest amount raised and awarded by this growing group of women. Through an ongoing partnership with 100WWCSD, the Richard M. Schulze Family Foundation, based in Minnesota, contributed an additional $5,000 matching grant.

Friends of Sussex CASA funds efforts to assist children experiencing foster care in Sussex County and in the Court Appointed Special Advocate Program. The group provides financial support for specific needs identified by the CASA volunteers that cannot be met by available state funds, and to support the volunteer training.

O’Doherty said support from 100 Women “provides us with the ability to make a meaningful impact on these children’s lives, bringing joy and normalcy to their lives during challenging times.” Based on individually identified needs, Friends members will be providing the children with creative support in the form of sports activities, camps, musical instruments, clothing, yearbooks, games, books, music lessons or technology gifts.

This is the 12th round of giving for 100WWCSD, formed in 2021, and brings the total of combined donations to more than $163,000. Members commit to donating $100 every three months. At quarterly luncheons, three members are selected to make a pitch for their favorite local nonprofit, and the voting that follows determines the recipient for that round of giving. The next luncheon meeting will be held at 12 p.m., Wednesday, April 17,  at Agave on Route 1 north of Rehoboth Beach.

Now at more than 100 women and going for 200, the group invites other wonderful women who care to attend the lunch, learn about the important work being done by nonprofits in Southern Delaware communities, and be a part of increasing their impact.
