Above the Dunes honored by Cape school district

Restaurant recognized for work with Sussex Consortium
December 8, 2024

Above the Dunes restaurant in Rehoboth Beach was honored by the Cape Henlopen School District Nov. 14, for its work with Sussex Consortium students.

“When [The Green Turtle] closed in 2022, many of our students were heartbroken,” said board member Bill Collick at the Nov. 14 school board meeting.

Since then, he said, students have been happy to return to work. Once a week, students go to the restaurant to wipe down menus, polish glasses and silverware, and prep some food items.

“One student in particular enjoys wiping down tables and chairs on the deck overseeing the Boardwalk, and often requests this task because he loves watching the ocean and the tourists passing by, which he finds very calming,” Collick said.

Staff helps the students as they do their tasks and answers questions whenever they arise, he said.

“Students truly enjoy their time at Above the Dunes, thanks to a wonderful staff and delicious lunches,” he said. “We are immensely grateful to the team at Above the Dunes for giving our students the chance to develop valuable skills in a restaurant environment.”

Editor’s note: The story has been updated to indicate The Green Turtle closed. Above the Dunes is still open.
