The ocean has temporarily been closed to swimmers in Dewey Beach after town officials discovered a syringe had washed ashore.

Town Manager Bill Zolper said town and police officials made the decision to prohibit swimming in the ocean about 4 p.m., Sept. 15. The closure is in effect until further notice,  Zolper said, noting people are still permitted to walk on the beach. The origin of the medical waste is unknown, Zolper said.
