For the first time since 2019, all three Thrasher’s French Fries locations in Rehoboth Beach are open.
For the past two years, the Thrasher’s location on the north side of Rehoboth Avenue and the Boardwalk one have opened. However, the one on the south side of Rehoboth Avenue, between Grotto Pizza and Go Fish!, has remained closed. In 2020, the location didn’t open because of COVID. In 2021, like many of the local businesses, the necessary staff to fill the job vacancies couldn’t be found.
During a job fair in April, Thrasher’s owner Dean Shuttleworth said he was hoping to open the third location, but he wasn’t going to work his staff to the bone or sacrifice quality to do so.
On June 14, Shuttleworth said he was very fortunate to have a number of returning employees, some new hires and a dozen J1 visa students. That’s up from six last year, he said of the J1s.
Shuttleworth said the goal is to have the third location open at least on the weekends, Thursday to Sunday. Staff are working one long shift per day, instead of breaking it down to two like it used to be, he said.
“Sometimes you’ve got to think outside the box,” he said.
After two years of being shuttered, Shuttleworth said he didn’t realize the effort it was going to take to reopen the south side location, but he’s happy he did.
“It certainly was a lot of work, but it was worth it,” said Shuttleworth.
Shuttleworth said he hopes customers who were loyal to the Thrasher’s on the south side of Rehoboth Avenue will return now that it’s open again. After being closed for two years, it’s possible they’ve gotten used to going to the two other locations, he said.
“It’s still a little concerning, but I’m going to remain optimistic,” said Shuttleworth.
