Allen Benjamin Parsons Jr., retired police chief, fireman
Allen Benjamin Parsons Jr., lovingly known as "Possum," passed away unexpectedly Friday, Nov. 22, 2024. Allen was a simple man with a big heart, remembered for his deep love of family, football, farming, the outdoors, and his community. Known for his quiet yet steadfast nature, he made a lasting impact through his unwavering commitment to service.
A proud graduate of Laurel High School and Delaware State Police Academy, Allen began his career in public service with the Laurel Police Department. He later joined Bridgeville Police Department, where he retired as chief of police.
Allen also devoted 27 years to the Delaware Fire Service. Starting at Laurel Fire Department, he spent the next 24 years serving Bridgeville Volunteer Fire Company in many capacities, including president, vice president, NREMT-B, and Delaware State Fire School instructor. His dedication to safety and education left an enduring legacy in his community.
Beyond his professional and volunteer roles, Allen was an active and proud member of Seaford Moose Lodge and Bridgeville Kiwanis Club. His leadership and sense of humor enriched the lives of many, bringing camaraderie and support to those around him.
Allen is survived by his loving children, Bruce (Jen) Parsons, Michael Parsons and Heather (A.J.) Davidson; eight grandchildren; and four great-grandchildren. He also leaves behind his brother, Brian (Amy) Parsons; and several nieces, nephews, and extended family. He was preceded in death by his parents, Allen and Louise Parsons; his son, Gary Lee Parsons; and his sister, Sue Parsons.
Known for his stubborn nature and rare, yet unforgettable, smiles, Allen's warmth and dedication were evident to all who truly knew him. His legacy of service, love for his family, and quiet strength will be forever cherished by all whose lives he touched.
Services with firefighters honors will be held at 1 p.m., Saturday, Nov. 30, at Parsell Funeral Homes & Crematorium, Hardesty Chapel, 202 Laws St., Bridgeville, where a viewing will begin at 11 a.m.
