Alliance awards students for academic achievement

February 4, 2021

Cape Henlopen High School seniors Abigail Ikechi-Konkwo and Jordan Winkfield are the first two students in the school district to receive the African American/Black Achievement Recognition Award from the Southern Delaware Alliance for Racial Justice. The alliance’s education committee initiated the award to recognize students who represent ideals of leadership, effort and excellence in their schools.

Both Abigail and Jordan have used increased at-home time during the COVID-19 epidemic to focus on their career aspirations and applying to colleges and universities.

Abigail plans to pursue a doctor of physiology degree to practice sports and family medicine. While she misses playing basketball, she continues to lift weights and enjoys reading.

Affirming an academic mindset, Jordan is bound for a career in actuarial science. He misses his active participation in DECA, a program that prepares emerging leaders in marketing and finance around the globe.

“We’re hoping this initiative will raise awareness of SDARJ’s youth programs, scholarship opportunities, and other educational programs,” said Alicia Jones, coordinator of the achievement recognition awards. “We will be recognizing outstanding students in each of the district’s other schools over the next eight weeks, based on the principals’ recommendations.”

Selected students will receive a gift certificate for Browseabout Books in Rehoboth Beach. While the awards are sponsored and funded by SDARJ, Browseabout is contributing one-third of the amount of each certificate.

The Southern Delaware Alliance for Racial Justice is a nonpartisan organization that educates, informs and advocates for racial justice, equality and fair opportunity. For more information about SDARJ awards and programs, go to sdarj.org.
