The Southern Delaware Alliance for Racial Justice recently honored Cape Henlopen High School juniors Navin Duffy and Casiya Chandler for their leadership, effort and excellence.
Navin’s teachers said he is an outgoing student who demonstrates responsibility, kindness and respect. Navin always has a smile on his face and sets a positive example for others. He goes out of his way to be a friendly face to his peers and to adults in the building, giving fist bumps to everyone. Academically, Navin is a wonderful student and classmate. Each year, he has increased his academic load to include more challenging classes. This year, he is taking AP U.S. History and several other honors classes. Navin also takes classes in the arts, adding piano to his schedule along with personal wellness.
According to her teachers, Casiya demonstrates dignity, strength and responsibility. She is quiet and reserved in school, but funny with her friends and family. She is often seen sitting and talking with her friends in the lunchroom, as well as reaching out to students whose second language is English, which shows what a kind and friendly person she is. Since freshman year, Casiya has added more challenging courses to her schedule, such as honors and AP courses, and she has been successful. Casiya is hardworking and dedicated to learning.
Navin and Casiya were honored in a ceremony held at the school, and each received a $20 gift card from SDARJ to Browseabout Books in Rehoboth Beach.
SDARJ initiated the African American Achievement Award to recognize students who represent the ideals of leadership, improvement, effort and excellence in their schools.
