Alpha Alpha Mu Omega celebrates Harriet Tubman’s 200th birthday

March 26, 2022

The ladies of Alpha Kappa Alpha Sorority Inc., Alpha Alpha Mu Omega Chapter, recently took part in a global walk for Harriet Tubman entitled, A Moving Tribute–Harriet Tubman’s 200th Birthday, honoring the legacy of this most important freedom fighter.

As is well known, Tubman was an American abolitionist instrumental in escaping slavery and subsequently rescuing approximately 70 additional enslaved people and leading them to freedom through the underground railroad.

Alpha Alpha Mu Omega partnered with Girltrek, a national organization designed to encourage Black women to live healthier lives though movement. Girltrek organizers believe that if Harriet Tubman could walk her way to freedom, women and girls can walk their way to better health.

Donned in the sorority’s colors of pink and green March 10, members of Alpha Alpha Mu Omega Chapter could be seen walking all over Sussex County alone and in small groups. One teacher in the chapter organized her students to walk around their school’s track four times, while others walked on the beach and throughout their neighborhoods. Pictures of chapter members walking were posted on the chapter’s social media pages.

Many members of Alpha Alpha Mu Omega were planning to continue with the idea of walking for health by initiating an April challenge of pledging to walk 30 minutes per day, in continued recognition of Harriet Tubman and her continuing inspiration.
