American Legion Post 17 in Lewes honored veterans at a ceremony Nov. 11.
The tribute began with the Cape Henlopen Junior ROTC presenting the colors. Sheila Allen, Auxiliary Unit 17 chaplain, offered the opening prayer. Liv Nehrbas sung the “Star-Spangled Banner.” Ethan Foos and Lily Armstrong led the audience in the Pledge of Allegiance.
John Nehrbas, Post 17 commander, said Veterans Day honors every soldier, sailor, marine, airman and guardian who faced the unknown to defend the United States’ way of life.
“Let us continue to honor your service, not just with words, but through our actions, by supporting veterans and working to uphold the freedoms for which you fought,” Nehrbas said.
Sgt. Michael Bellerose, U.S. Air Force retired and a Post 17 member, was the featured guest speaker. Bellerose deployed during Operation Enduring Freedom and Operation Iraqi Freedom. He said the American flag gave him hope and strength.
“On my first deployment, I received an American flag in a care package. I carried that flag with me every day while deployed. When I got home, I put it on my wall. When I deployed again, I put it back in my pocket,” Bellerose said.
Kellie Bergen, Auxiliary Unit 17 president, and Matt Williams, Sons of the American Legion Squadron 17 commander, also delivered remarks.
Donna Gordon led the audience in “God Bless America.” Dave Shook, Post 17 Legion chaplain, gave the closing prayer.
Nehrbas and John Guenther, Post 17 vice commander, awarded member Rupert Martinez with the Legionnaire of the Year award. Martinez was recognized for working behind the scenes on the post’s video gambling and computer network, which they said saved thousands of dollars.
