Andrew Wells Polite, retired dispatcher

Andrew Wells Polite,  89, of  Lewes, passed away peacefully Tuesday, March 15, 2011, at his residence with his family by his side.  He was born in Lewes Sunday, May 15, 1921, son of the late Theodore and Gertrude (Wells) Polite.

Mr. Polite proudly served with the U.S. Army and was a Purple Heart recipient during World War II in the Asiatic Pacific Theater.  He was a member of VFW Post 7447 in Rehoboth Beach.  He enjoyed a long career delivering bread in the retail and wholesale food delivery industry.

He later served as chief dispatcher or the Cape Henlopen Maritime Exchange.   His favorite pasttimes included spending time with family, woodcarving, scroll sawing, gardening and reading Western books.

In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by his wife Betty Jane Polite in October  2006; two grandsons: Nicholas Sackett and Douglas Brockway Jr.; two brothers: Theodore Polite Jr. and Edgar Polite; and a sister, Margaret Newcomb.

He is survived by his son, Don Polite and his wife Ruth Ann, Lewes; three daughters: Peggy Truitt, Lewes, Debi Stearns and her husband Curtis of Trenton, S.C., and Teri Ysaguirre and her husband Frank, Milford; grandchildren: Missy Walls, Matthew Brockway and Jeremy Brockway, all of Lewes, Kimberly Gleaton of Laurel, William Polite of Lewes,  Nancy Dixon of Richland, N.C., Lori Stackpole of Cincinnati, Ohio, Chris Edwards of Black Mountain, N.C.; 17 great-grandchildren; two sisters: Cecelia Hudson and Alberta Cowan; and his beloved canine, Poncho.

Funeral services will be held at 2 p.m., Friday, March 18, at Parsell Funeral Homes & Crematorium. Atkins-Lodge Chapel, 16961 Kings Highway, Lewes, where friends may call beginning at 1 p.m.  Burial will follow the services at All Saints’ Cemetery, 20274 Beaver Dam Road at Route 23, Harbeson.
