Anime matinee films return to Cinema Art Theater Jan. 15

January 7, 2023

The Rehoboth Beach Film Society announced its next foray into the world of anime films, introducing acclaimed animated features from Studio Ghibli. With the input of local manga student clubs, RBFS has chosen epic film masterpieces for all ages that will be screened with English subtitles on select Sundays at the Cinema Art Theater in Lewes.

All are welcome to the anime matinee events beginning at 2 p.m., Sunday, Jan. 15, with “Tokyo Godfathers,” the acclaimed holiday classic from master director Satoshi Kon. Cosplay participants are encouraged.

In modern-day Tokyo, three homeless people’s lives are forever changed when they discover a baby girl at a garbage dump on Christmas Eve. As the new year approaches, these three forgotten members of society band together to solve the mystery of the abandoned child and the fate of her parents. Along the way, encounters with seemingly unrelated events and people force them to confront their own haunted pasts, as they learn to face their future together.

Co-written by Keiko Nobumoto and featuring a whimsical score by Keiichi Suzuki, “Tokyo Godfathers” is a masterpiece by turns heartfelt, hilarious and highly original, a tale of hope and redemption in the face of seemingly insurmountable odds.

Additional screening titles and dates are “Inu-Oh,” Jan. 29, “On-Gaku: Our Sound,” Feb. 5; “New Gods Yang Jian,” Feb. 12; “Mirai,” Feb. 26; “Ride Your Wave,” March 5; and “Belle,” March 12.

”Japan created the anime genre, beautiful hand-drawn and computer-generated films. Each movie is an artistic creation for both its storytelling and imagery. We’re thrilled to bring this series to CAT and our diverse patrons of all ages,” said Helen Chamber, executive director.

Admission to anime matinees is $5 for students, $9 for members and $11.50 for general audiences. Patrons are encouraged to purchase admission online at rehobothfilm.com. If seats are available, admission can be purchased at the theater starting 30 minutes prior to each screening.
