Annie Handy, true matriarch

Annie Handy, 82, passed away peacefully at her home in Selbyville Wednesday, July 24, 2024. She was born Aug. 18, 1941, in Wilson, N.C., to her late parents Dorsey Hilliard and Mary Hilliard (Hagans).

Annie was the cherished wife of Lemuel R. Handy Sr., with whom she shared 64 years of devoted marriage. Together, they raised a large and loving family, including their seven children, Pauline Wescott (Larry) of Bishopville, Md., Lemuel R. Handy Jr. (Denise) of Selbyville, Jaqueline Askins of Bishopville, Kimberley Leonard of Selbyville, Jennifer Handy of Millsboro, Regina Handy-Tull of Selbyville, and Ella Handy (Quincy Ransey) of Severn, Md. She was a proud grandmother to 18 grandchildren, 21 great-grandchildren, and four great-great-grandchildren, all of whom she adored and watched over with great care.

Annie was the loving sister to Reva Bivens (Denver Sr.) of Selbyville, John Hilliard (Rosetta) of Williamsville, and Connie Hilliard (Maurine) of Williamsville. She was a dear aunt and cousin to many, and she held a special place in her heart for her nieces, nephews, and the countless friends she considered family. She was preceded in death by her parents; as well as her two brothers, Lonnie Hilliard and Dorsey Hilliard Jr.; and her granddaughter, Victoria Cannon.

Throughout her life, Annie was known for her exceptional sewing skills, having made all the clothes for her children in their early years. She was a true matriarch, not only protecting her family but also creating a warm and welcoming home. Her hands were rarely still, and her heart was always open. Annie’s legacy is one of unconditional love, unwavering support, and the beautiful family she raised. Her memory will be cherished and kept alive through the stories shared by those who knew her best.

A viewing for Annie will be held from 2 to 4 p.m., Thursday, Aug. 1, at Watson Funeral Home and Crematorium, 211 S. Washington St., Millsboro.
